The Department of Design and Computation Arts offers programs that examine the broad vision or culture of design within contemporary society. Digital technologies are integrated into the creative process to enhance strategies for communication, application, representation and dissemination.

Major in Design - 72 Credits

The Major in Design program is located primarily within the domains of image, object-making and screen-based media with an emphasis on applications of material, visual and spatial cultural studies. The program recognizes and promotes design as a persuasive form of intervention within the physical and discursive landscape. Students develop a background in the three streams (image/object/multimedia) and then specialize according to their interests and abilities. In both the theoretical and practical considerations of the program, curriculum integrates creative experimentation in design with societal, ecologically-oriented and collaborative productions. One off and multiple productions in the areas of print works, web sites, typography, furniture, 3d rapid prototyping, display, web sites and design installations are created.

Specialization in Computation Arts - 60 Credits

The Specialization in Computation Arts is intended for students who are interested in pursuing in-depth studies into the design of digital media with an emphasis on design elements rather than computation elements. The program focuses on design for multimedia, the web and interactive environments and provides a course of study which emphasizes three principal areas of creative production: image, sound and virtual dimension.

Major in Computation Arts - 45 Credits

The Major in Computation Arts program combines two core curricula: computer science and the digital media component of design art. Graduates are technically adept in programming, algorithm design and computational theory, and are creatively skilled in image, sound and virtual dimension design.

*The Major in Computation Arts must be taken in combination with the Option in Computer Applications offered by the Department of Computer Science.

Minor in Computation Arts - 24 Credits

The Minor in Computation Arts provides students from other departments with the opportunity to explore digital media design and the use of computation for creative expression.
